VRML
VRML, or Virtual Reality Modeling Language, is a file format for describing 3D interactive worlds and objects, intended for use on the web. It is a text-based script that defines 3D models using primitives like spheres and cubes, and it was designed to be platform-independent, allowing users to interact with these virtual scenes through browser plug-ins or standalone viewers. While influential, the standard has since been superseded by X3D.
What VRML is
3D modeling for the web: VRML was created to standardize 3D content on the World Wide Web, unlike HTML which was designed for text and links.
Interactive and networked: It allows for the creation of interactive, networked 3D scenes, which can include hyperlinks and multimedia information.
Platform-independent: VRML files, typically with a .wrl extension, can be viewed on most operating systems through browser plug-ins or viewers.
Time-based and dynamic: Later versions added support for animation, user interaction, and event-based behavior, making the 3D "worlds" dynamic.
