UPnP
UPnP, or Universal Plug and Play, is a networking protocol that allows devices on a local network to automatically discover and communicate with each other, simplifying tasks like connecting a new printer or smart device. It automates the process of finding devices, assigning IP addresses, and establishing connections, but can pose security risks by allowing malware to create unwanted access through the network's firewall.
How UPnP works
Discovery: When a new device joins a network, it sends out a discovery message.
Announcement: Other UPnP-enabled devices respond with their own announcement message, letting others know they are available.
Description: Devices then share information about their features and capabilities so they can be controlled and used together.
Connection: UPnP automatically sets up the necessary connections for data sharing and control, such as streaming a video from your phone to your TV.
Port Forwarding: It can also automatically configure a router to allow specific external connections, which is useful for applications like online gaming or accessing a smart home device remotely.
