In computer and internet terms, Twitter (now known as X) is a social media platform for microblogging, where users send short messages called tweets. Key terms include: follow, to subscribe to another user's posts; retweet, to share another user's tweet with your followers; hashtag (#), which categorizes tweets; and direct message (DM), a private message between users.
Core functions
Tweet: A short message, originally limited to 140 characters but now up to 280, posted to the platform.
Follow: To subscribe to another user's tweets, causing them to appear in your main feed.
Home feed: The primary page where a user sees tweets from people they follow, as well as other content like ads.
Interactions
Retweet: To share another user's tweet with your own followers.
Quote tweet: A retweet that includes your own comment.
Reply: To respond directly to an existing tweet.
Mention: To include another user's @username in a tweet or reply, which notifies them.
Hashtag: A keyword or phrase preceded by a # symbol (e.g., #tech) that categorizes the tweet and makes it searchable by others interested in that topic.
