A "troll" is an individual who intentionally posts inflammatory, disruptive, or malicious comments online to provoke an emotional response from others. This behavior, known as "trolling," aims to upset people and disrupt civil online discussions, such as those in comment sections or forums. Trolls often exploit online anonymity to hide their identity and say things they wouldn't in person.

Purpose: Trolls seek to cause conflict, spread negativity, and generate a reaction, often for their own amusement or to gain attention. Their actions can cause real emotional harm to their targets.

Methods: Trolling can involve posting off-topic comments, spreading lies, making personal attacks, or "baiting" people with controversial statements to start arguments.

Motivation: While the stereotype is a malicious individual, research suggests that situational factors can influence anyone to troll. Trolls may be motivated by a desire for mischief or "negative social potency," which is the enjoyment of causing suffering.

Response: The common advice is to not "feed the trolls" by engaging with them, as this often makes the situation worse. It is more effective to ignore their posts and report the abusive behavior to the platform's moderators.
