Shift Key
The shift key is a modifier key on a computer keyboard used to type uppercase letters and access the alternate "upper" symbol or character on a key. It can be used for temporary capitalization by holding it down while pressing a letter, or to execute shortcuts and other functions by holding it down in combination with other keys, such as for text selection or permanent shortcuts like Shift + Delete to permanently delete a file.
Functions of the shift key
Typing:
Capitalization: Holding the shift key while pressing a letter produces an uppercase character (e.g., a becomes A).
Symbols: On number and symbol keys, it produces the alternate character that is typically printed smaller on the key (e.g., 2 becomes @, 9 becomes ().
Shortcuts and other functions:
Text selection: Holding the shift key and pressing an arrow key selects text one character or line at a time.
Shift + Delete: Permanently deletes a file without sending it to the Recycle Bin.
Shift + Restart: In Windows, holding Shift while clicking Restart opens the advanced startup options.
