Online
"Online" describes a state of being connected to a network, most commonly the internet, which allows for communication and access to information. Being "offline" means a device is disconnected. This term applies to both users and their devices, and also to the activities that take place over the internet, such as "online shopping" or "online gaming".
What "online" means
Connected to a network: A computer or device is "online" when it is connected to a network, like the internet, to send and receive data.
Ready for use: When a device is online, it is powered on and ready for use, whether it's a computer, printer, or other electronic device.
Synonymous with "virtual": In many cases, "online" is used interchangeably with "virtual," as in "virtual learning".
Different from being on a local network: A device can be "online" in a local network (like being connected to a Wi-Fi router) but still "offline" in terms of internet access if the router isn't connected to the web.
