In computer terminology, "maximize" refers to the action of expanding a software application window to fill the entire screen. This provides the largest possible view of the application, often for better focus on a single task.

Function and user interface

Maximize button: This is a control element located in the title bar of a window in a graphical user interface (GUI), typically found in the top-right corner on Windows systems. It is commonly represented by a single square icon.

Toggles to "Restore Down": Once a window is maximized, the button icon changes to two overlapping squares. Clicking this "restore down" button returns the window to its previous size and position.

Behavior on different platforms:

Windows: A maximized window fills the screen, but the taskbar typically remains visible.

macOS: The green button on Mac computers is officially called the "zoom" button, and it can send an app into full-screen mode, hiding the menu bar and dock.
