It allows users to select items, move them, and give instructions by using buttons for actions like "click" or "double-click" and a scroll wheel for navigating through documents and websites. The name comes from its small size and the tail-like cable that resembles the rodent.

Key functions and terms

Input Device: A hardware component that sends data to a computer. The mouse sends data about its location and selection to the computer.

Pointing Device: A tool that allows you to point to objects on a computer's screen.

Cursor: An on-screen pointer that moves in accordance with the physical movement of the mouse.
