Metaverse
The metaverse is a broad computer term describing a persistent, shared, 3D virtual space where users can interact with each other and a computer-generated environment in real time. It is often envisioned as the next generation of the internet, where users will be "inside" the experience rather than merely viewing it on a screen.
Core characteristics
Key attributes that define a metaverse include:
Immersion: Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology provide a sense of being physically present within the digital world.
Persistence: The virtual world continues to exist and evolve even when a user is not logged in.
Interactivity: Users, represented by digital avatars, can engage with other people and manipulate the virtual environment.
Interoperability: This is a crucial, though not yet fully realized, feature that would allow users and their digital assets to move seamlessly between different virtual platforms.
User agency: Users have the ability to create their own content, shaping the environment and experiences within it.
Digital economy: Many metaverses include a functional economy where users can buy, sell, and trade digital goods and services, often using cryptocurrency and NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to verify ownership.
