Meta Tag

index img

A meta tag is a snippet of HTML code placed in the head section of a webpage that provides metadata about the page's content to search engines and browsers. These tags are not visible to users on the page itself but help search engines understand and rank the content, and they can also be used to control browser behavior like character encoding or mobile display. Common examples include the title tag, the meta name="description" tag, and the meta name="keywords" tag.

Function and purpose

Search engine optimization (SEO): Meta tags help search engines understand a webpage's content, which can influence how it appears in search results. For example, the description meta tag can be displayed as the snippet in search results.

Browser control: They instruct web browsers on how to display the content, such as setting the character encoding using meta charset="..." or adjusting the viewport for mobile devices with meta name="viewport".

Information delivery: They provide other information about the document, such as the author, copyright details, and instructions for how search engines should crawl or index the page.
