A computer keyboard is an input device that allows users to enter text, commands, and data into a computer by pressing keys. Keyboards have various keys, including alphanumeric keys for typing, modifier keys (like Shift and Ctrl) that change the function of other keys, and function keys (F1-F12) with program-specific actions. They can be connected via wires or wirelessly, and modern ones often use a USB connection.

Types of keyboards

Standard keyboards: Come in various sizes and layouts, including full-sized models with a numeric keypad and smaller, "compact" keyboards that omit the keypad to save space.

Virtual (on-screen) keyboards: A software-based keyboard displayed on a screen that can be operated with a mouse or touchscreen.

Projection keyboards: Use lasers to project a keyboard onto a flat surface, with sensors detecting finger movements as key presses.

Chorded keyboards: Use combinations of multiple keys pressed simultaneously to perform actions, allowing for a large number of functions on a smaller number of keys.
