IM
In computer terms, IM primarily stands for Instant Messaging. It is a form of online communication that enables real-time, text-based conversations between two or more people over a network, such as the internet.
How Instant Messaging works
Application-based: Users install software, or a "client," on their device (like a computer or smartphone) that connects to a central server.
Status awareness: The system indicates which users are currently online and available to accept messages. For a conversation to happen, both participants must be logged in to the same, or a compatible, service.
Real-time exchange: Messages typed by one person appear on the other person's screen almost instantly, enabling a dynamic, back-and-forth conversation.
Functionality: Modern instant messaging has evolved beyond simple text.
IM vs. email: Instant messaging offers a more immediate form of communication than email. Unlike email, which is asynchronous (meaning you don't need to be online at the same time as the recipient), IM requires a simultaneous connection between users to exchange messages.
