Hypermedia
Hypermedia is a computer system that combines text, graphics, sound, and video, allowing users to navigate between them non-linearly through hyperlinks. It is an extension of hypertext and presents information in an interactive, network-like structure, with the World Wide Web being a prime example of hypermedia in action.
Key components and features
Non-linear navigation: Unlike traditional linear media (like a book), hypermedia allows users to jump from one piece of information to another based on their interests, creating a personal path through the content.
Integration of media: It fuses different types of media, such as text, images, audio clips, and videos, into a single, interconnected system.
Hyperlinks: These are the clickable links that connect different parts of the information. Users click on them to navigate to another piece of content, such as a web page, image, or audio file.
Nodes and links: The structure of hypermedia is often described as a network of "nodes" (the individual pieces of information) and "links" (the connections between them).
Interactive experience: Hypermedia is inherently interactive, enabling users to actively engage with the information rather than passively receiving it.
